The Ecosuburb of Trinitat Nova

2000-2011 // Barcelona City Council

As a result of unsustainable architectural degradation of a third of existing homes in the neighbourhood of Trinitat Nova, the need for their rehabilitation and a strong neighbourhood mobilisation, since 1997 an exemplary participatory process is carried out. As a result, local organisations got the involvement of the local and regional governments in the process of defining and creating the first green neighbourhood of Barcelona, the "Water District".

During the years 2000-2001, a transdisciplinary team made up of Ecoinstitut with Aiguasol and Gea21 with other neighbourhood organisations and under the supervision of the Urban Ecology Agency, drew up sectoral studies that propose a coherent intervention in all aspects of sustainability: mobility, the treatment of public spaces and green areas, water and energy management and the treatment of construction waste.

Ecoinstitut develops the studies related to water and public space - which includes proposals for environmental indicators such as the Biotic Soil Index (today applied as IDEEU in the neighbourhood of Gracia and Poblenou) - and collaborates in the study on construction waste with Albert Sagrera (Organic Society).

ubsequently, between 2010 and 2011, Ecoinstitut defined different intervention strategies to revalue the neighbourhood's Casa de l'Aigua as a municipal facility, integrated into a global concept of environmental and heritage education on the intrinsic values of the water cycle.
